Each year during the High Holy Days, we sink into a deep reflection of ourselves. We humbly try to unravel the kind of person we want to be. Lately, I have discovered how to do this every week, all year long, and I’m going to let you in on my secret: I surround myself with children.
How can the children lead us toward being better people?
I’ll share a few nuggets:
Children are unabashedly spiritual. They can talk about God and angels and death and prayer like you and I talk about the weather.
Children live in the present. They are not bound by the fast-paced rush to accomplish things like we crazy grown-ups.
Children love learning and discovering new things. They are willing to shift their way of thinking and explore and try and fail and try again.
As we enter the High Holiday season, let’s allow the children to be our leaders. Let’s allow them to help us be more spiritual and present, to explore and discover, and to be valuable members of our community. May our children lead us to be better people each and every day.
L’Shana Tovah U’Metukah,
Cheryl
