Sukkot brings people outdoors. People who like power tools and construction, people who like to eat with guests, and people who like to shake the lulav. And this year, we are rejoicing a little extra because for the first time in 18 months, Sukkot has brought our community together. Hinei Ma Tov! How good and how pleasant that has been!
A week ago, parents who had never met one another gathered to build our new mega-Sukkah (purchased with funding from PTO and a Staenberg Anything Grant). Some came looking for any opportunity to volunteer. Some came with tools, skills and a steady hand. And some came to support their Middle Schoolers who wanted to help. In building our sukkah, they also built community!
And last night, families gathered for Simchat Sukkot. We bonded outdoors, enjoying beautiful weather, a petting zoo (complete with alpacas, bunnies, goats, sheep and chickens) and music by Rabbi Scott Shafrin and Reb Scott. Shinshinit Shelly helped students invite historic Israeli figures as ushpizin (guests) into our sukkah, and Reb Scott taught students to weave schach using natural materials. of course, there was plenty of lulav shaking.
At Mirowitz we use the outdoors for learning, not just to take a break from learning. We know that outdoor time nourishes a child’s brain, and Sukkot reminds us that it also nourishes our community.
Thanks for being part of our Sukkot celebrations and our kehillah kedosh (holy community). We are certainly stronger together.
