A Model Community

A BLUEPRINT FOR A MODEL COMMUNITY

Every year on Sukkot, I make an effort to find myself outdoors…eating in a sukkah, hiking in the woods, riding my bike. No matter what I’m doing, spending time immersed in nature inspires me in the same way:

• I gain perspective that I am part of something much bigger than myself.
• I am reminded that the earth is a beautiful gift.
• I renew my sense of obligation to help make this earth a better place in some small way.

It also reminds me why I’m so passionate about growing a generation of people who feel likewise compelled by their Jewish heritage to build a better world. At Mirowitz, our community is intentionally designed to provide a model of what is possible. I want our students to leave us one day with this understanding:

• that their every word and action has power, and that they can use that power to improve their community.
• that kindness leads to more kindness, and vice versa.
• that learning is part of life, and that it leads us to a higher place.
• that our voice matters, and we should use it when we want to make a change, resolve differences and share ideas.

This Sukkot, carve out some time to immerse yourself in nature. Think about how you are using your power to improve the community and renew your sense of purpose.
